The woods on the edge of the field are nice and quiet. And it allows the Family Westmark to embark on one of their favorite pasttimes. Already Katarina and Paule are in a full tilt.

When Paule said to arrive in Laketown in the armor of their house, he was not kidding. The sudden deployment of the Westmark military to the border in response to the Sollinger threat, the Baron also ordered the family out of Wolveshire and back to neutral territory. That is where the kids will find Paule and Katarina, in the middle of what appears to be a battle. As he moves along the trees of the woods outside of town, he attempts to sneak up on his wife, as the Baron takes to the shadows that gave him his name. Katarina is visible for a moment, before she too tries to stalk after her husband.

There's a reason that this is called a 'war game', because it is precisely the sort of practice that keeps her - and all of their soldiers - alive when other, heavily armored and armed soldiers not quite as lucky. Bash and smash tactics work well, when two knights in full plate armor meet on the field of battle to bash and smash, hammer and clash against each other. But in a land that is as much made up of bogs, watery marsh lands, salt water coast line and the open invitation to fall into the water and drown out of pure stupidity.. well, there's a reason they wear the gear that they do. Kat moves as quietly as she can, one step after another, taking time taking care to pace in her own footsteps, eyes sweeping the shadows to catch even the barest hint of a gleam that would identify the location of the Baron.

Castor has made his way to the field by himself, after taking some time to scout the area in advance. At present he is IN one of the trees near the field, having been there since before sunrise - it was cozy. Spotting the arrival of the soldiers - his family's soldiers - he smirks from within the hood of his brown-and-black cloak, and begins to make his descent.

He was never as good as his twin with the sneaking thing, which is one of the reasons he likes the bow so much - one never has to get too close.

He sighs silently.

It would have been nice to be permitted to do this with a bow and arrow, but his father said - nay, commanded: 'Daggers only!'. The youth drops as silently as he can to the ground, landing in a crouch on his haunches and immediately begins sneaking to the most likely place his parents are.

Detecting them, or surprising them - either would be a nice little victory for him.

That might have been a brief flash of steel in the moonlight, a glimpse of armor in the trees, that rustle could have been Paule in the underbrush. There's a whisper of a bird call, the baron playfully calling out to his wife as he continues to stalk after his wife unaware of the arrival of the siblings yet. Or at least, that's until Castor is nearly in his path of attack and the Shadow Baron has to adjust to not be detected as he continues the stalking of Katarina.

Finally getting the drop on her, the Baroness will here the slight click of Paule pulling his dagger free from his sheath and attempts to score it gently across her armor, before he quickly tries to pull away and back into the shadows.

Cricket has no compunctions about /not/ following her father's orders — at least not where the dress code is concerned. She doesn't care to be encumbered by anything more than ratty togs better suited for incineration than they are for wearing, the old boots that cover her feet in a similar state of semi-decay. It's all according to her design, though: she makes much less noise this way and won't pay any mind to getting herself positively filthy if required.

From where she lies flat under a tangled mass of fallen trees and wild-growing shrubs, she hears the faintest hints of her family's movement. Let them tire themselves out chasing one another — she'll 'despatch' them one at a time once they're forced to rest or momentarily make themselves scarce. Morever: dotted throughout the surroundings are little well-concealed pitfalls, calculated to be more annoying than dangerous (they're shallow, after all), but enough of a nuisance to trip up an unlucky family member should they blunder into one.

Naturally, she hopes her twin will be the first to fall flat on his face. Oh look. There's Castor now. He probably thought he was /clever/ to hide in that tree.

There might have been a brief flash of steel in the moonlight, a hint of a glimpse, aye, but her husband - that stealthy sneaky underhanded master of the silent attack manages to tap his dagger against her armor before he fades into the shadows again. Or.. nearly so. As Baron and Baroness of Shadows, they are equally matched more often than not. Today being one of those days where it's turn for turn, moving lightly - silently - on her feet, to graze the edge of her dagger against his armor before she, too, fades once more into the shadows. The game, after all, is afoot. She searches as much for Paule in the shadows as she does for both children. Intuition, as much as experience, teaching her to preserve her strength and energy, knowing that one child will likely bide her time while the other will try to out-sneak out-stealth out-think out-surprise everyone else. Some families play cards.. they play war.

Castor scowls.

Knowing his luck, one of his family can probably read the expression on his face, but he did for a moment think he almost had someone. Figures. But it is not what he sees or hears that draws him to his target of choice (since sneaking up on his parents is… well, most do not live to tell about it.

If I were Polly, where would I be… he wonders silently, his eyes glancing up and to the side at the tree from which he just dropped. So much for that… and then he spots her, not long after she has already spotted him.

Steel whispers against leather as he draws his dirk, keeping it hidden beneath his cloak, all the while sneaking as quickly and silently as he can to close the modest gap in between them.

He puts himself into a roll to cross the last few feet in a moment, and attempts to skim the edge of his blade lightly across his sister's armor, underneath her arm, right in between her ribs (at least, that is where the blade would cut if he were trying to kill someone).

Cold steel reflects equally cold moonlight for just an instant as the dagger winks defiantly at the eye in the sky…

Not yet, brother. Initially perturbed that her twin has so readily picked up her scent, she silently counts down to the inevitable strike. He may /think/ he has the advantage, but Cricket isn't a thing to be so easily cornered and defeated. It takes only an instant for her to move out of the way and let Castor suffer the laws of physics as she uses his forward momentum to assist her in planting his face into the ground. He was crazy enough to try to /roll/, after all… let him deal with a sampling of Mother Nature for his efforts! "Hope the dirt's tasty, Cas," she whispers before slinking out of the underbrush, now determined to get on the heels of her parents and see them similarly bested. Of course, there's little chance of /that/ happening, but she can always hang at the periphery, right? A tall truk serves to momentarily conceal her from Paule and Katarina.

When the knife catches across his chest and marks his armor, Paule blinks for a moment in surprise as Katarina's combat skill shines through for a moment and he offers his wife a blown kiss before he disappears back into the shadows. And then he calls out to her in a whistle, a small tune.

I'll take the girl, you take the boy. the song says to his wife.

What, did you think that only the twins had a code? As the two twins tumble and fight with each other, their father approaches into the shadows towards the pair. Dropping in behind Coriaria, Paule's arm wraps around his daughter's neck and his blade flashes for a moment as he pulls back, allowing her to get a grip on him. "I told you to wear your armor." the Shadow Baron chides as he looks to see where his wife should be dropping in at any moment.

The answering whisper of a whistle, for that's what it is, after all - she does whisper different than Paule does, it's genetics - answering and confirming as she catches the wink of steel, the whisper of leather, the sound of boots on the forest floor littered with leaves, twigs, the soft loam decomposing beneath all. She moves silently, taking her time - her sweet time, in some ways it could be said - to track her Son while leaving Paule to deal with their daughter. After all, it's only fair - the division of labor and all that. She rolls one shoulder subtly, setting herself in his wake, matching her steps to his - his longer stride making her footing a little less easy but she's spent more than half her life matching stride to stride with her husband, after all, she's learned how to move. As she draws near there's just the quietest sound off leaves under foot - just enough and she knows it - to give her position away.

Paule's fatherly 'mistake' allows Cricket to find purchase on his sword-arm, her right hand grabbing his wrist as she turns to use her weight to bear down with the bones of her left forearm against the delicate area just above the back of his elbow. If she's successful, she'll drive her father to his knees. Has she moved quickly enough? She must /always/ move quickly, for her diminutive size can work against her if caught trying to force a larger opponent to knuckle under. "Armor is noisy," she shoots back, a grunt escaping her from the effort.

The quietest sound of leaves is all it takes for the Shadow Baron's son to to move.

Of course, lying on one's back in the turf after being soundly - embarrassingly - beaten by his sister, does leave his options… somewhat limited. Rolling backward a little to give himself some momentum, the youth flips himself onto his feet, landing in a crouch. He spins, dirk held in a reverse grip and blocks the incoming strike from his mother with his free arm - crossing in front of her dagger-arm to keep the dagger away from scoring any points at the expense of his favourite armour.

And his pride.

The parry is not the only move he makes as he spins inward along his mother's arm, his own dirk poised for point of his own - only to find himself similarly blocked. He grins in the moonlight, under his hood, at Katarina.

"Hello Mother," he whispers very softly, grinning like a cheshire cat. "You wear the shadows well; who is your tailor?" Then he attempts to throw himself away for yet another round of cat 'n mouse.

As Coriaria goes to throw her elbow back, her father simply is no longer there. The Baron struck and made his point. However, on his way out, Coriaria will feel the brush of wind as he swipes the flat of his blade at his daughter's backside for an attempted swat to remind her of why she should wear armor before he's gone again.
