Staff Oath

I. My Purpose
I am here to improve and enrich the game and maintain an exciting, immersive, and high-quality game with the responsibilities I've been entrusted, be it helping fellow Staff, running scenes, resolving disputes, or overseeing players. I will always remember that I am an steward to the community, and will always place the well-being of the game over personal goals within the game. I also understand that this is a volunteer job, and real life always comes first. I will always post and inform Staff when I am gone, and for how long, and why. If due to real-life circumstances I can no longer actively staff, I will step down.

II. My Behavior
I will treat players with respect and courtesy, no matter my personal opinion, or if they don't return the respect.

I will show no favoritism. Not toward other Staff members, not toward my buddies, not toward my IC factions. If there is a direct conflict of interest I will immediately ask another Staff member to take over, or if it's not possible, I will refuse to participate as Staff.

I will never leak secrets including but not limited to secrets of plots, game mechanics, building, or secrets of PCs in any medium to non-Staff (IM, e-mail, page, etc.) NO sharing someone's character background with my buddies or any players. What's said and done in Staff, STAYS in Staff and what I know of players will not be divulged to any other player.

I will conduct myself in a trustworthy, professional and respectful manner to both my peers and players, and be an excellent example of good conduct that upholds the spirit of our rules and sportsmanship. I will never call players offensive names nor belittle them in front of any other players.

I will never act rashly; I will get my facts straight before offering any definitive answer to players. Examples include but are not limited to answering coding and building questions, running a scene using confidential plot info, investigating an OOC dispute. Even if this means that the player in question has to wait a few days. I will act with all deliberate speed, but I will not rush.

III. My Responsibilities
I am responsible for what I see. Inaction can be a mistake. I will accomplish my duties in a fair and impartial manner always. I fully understand our player policies and rules, and will both uphold them and model them.

When I am logged in on my Staff account, I will take an active part in the game-world and enrich the atmosphere for the players' enjoyment. If I am to be gone for more than several minutes, I will log off. I will not log in to idle. Being a Staff member is a privilege and an onerous task; I will work as hard as I can to improve the game through my duties.

While enjoying myself and playing my own character is important, by agreeing to this Oath, I place my duties as a Staff member first. Should the need arise, I must drop what I'm doing as my own character to attend to Staff matters. If that is necessary, I will do it promptly and politely.

IV. Final Addendum
I will always keep in mind why I am Staff. My first duty as is to improve the game. I also understand that real life is a higher priority for myself and for other players.

By accepting the post as Staff I am also accepting this Oath, I am fully aware of all regulations and rules that are expected of me as a Staff member, and I agree to follow them to my best ability and wholeheartedly.

Staff Organization

We are going to try to keep the staffing organization very simple. To that end here is a breakdown on the roles of each Staff position:

Wizard
Wizards have over all control and direction of the game. He/she will be the final arbiter in all situations. He/she shall select who shall be on staff. When the need arises the Head Wizard will also perform the duties of STs and Helpers. The Wizard of the game is Azrael.

Admin
Admin are tasked with generating and running game wide TPs, assisting those Houses that may be struggling, and when asked provide assistance to Player's run TPs. Admin will also act as Judges when the need arises. Certain Admin will have additional duties, such as CharGen approval, building, ect. More times than not Admin will be the one's replying to +requests. Admin will also fill in the duties of Helpers when needed.

Helpers
Helpers will be selected from players to provide assistance to the game. Be it to answer questions on the NEWBIE channel, assist in Houses receiving attention when needed, filling in the ranks of player run TPs when asked (even up to creating a temp character to be beat up upon - as an example). In general Helpers are just that, Helpers in all aspects of the game. They will have intimate knowledge of Theme and the systems we employ. They will also bring to the attention of Admin and if need be the Wizards any problems that may be occurring. Helpers will be very active players, they will always be on the lookout to generate RP. To be a Helper on Game of Kings will require a very active player and one that is inclusive, thinking and have the players needs always to the fore front.

Staff Spying

While a Mush, and in particular Game of Kings, is not a very private place spying on players or fellow staff members is prohibited. Though Staff may not be legally obligated to guarantee privacy or free speech, a mush quickly becomes unenjoyable if a certain level of privacy and freedom is not maintained.

On Game of Kings all staff members will always make a reasonable effort to avoid prying into any material that the player does not want to be made public. Staff will not examine any player's private objects unless absolutely necessary. When it becomes necessary the staff member will obtain advance permission from the player before so, when possible.

Staff will not examine private data even if it is stored on global objects. Player +mail is perhaps the most sensitive of all. Under no circumstances will a staff member read any player's private +mail.

In addition, eavesdropping is equally prohibited. Staff will not usedark objects, listen patterns, or other code to listen in on players having private conversations including but not limited to pages.

Should a Staff member, in the course of Staff's normal duties, accidentally overhear a private conversation he/she will immediately inform everyone affected and apologize for the accidental intrusion as well as log it to the Admin BB. It is the staff member's responsibility to take resonable efforts to avoid situations that might result in a violation of a player's privacy.

During the course of a Staff member's duties a sensitive situation may require that he/she bend or break some of the above rules. For example, if an admin is investigating a claim of illegal alts, he might need to examine attributes on the suspected players in order to search for similarities. Whenever a situation like this arises, never pass along or gossip about any private information he/she may have stumbled across — not even to other staff members. Guard as much of the player's privacy as you can, while still performing your duties.

Staff Story Tellers

On Game of Kings we have set Story Tellers (STs) to assist with RP development and plots.

First we want to empower you, the players, to run your own tiny-plots (TPs). All we ask is that you inform Staff/ST so that your TP doesn't conflict with any others that have been planned. We also ask that you use the Rumors BB, and, if possible, let the staff know what is going on periodically.

Our STs are here to provide game-wide TPs, help struggling Factions, and to assist you in your TPs when needed. We will be very flexible in providing help, and we are here to help enhance RP.

STs will also be our Judges. They are to be called in ANY time there is a possibility of a character death. They should also be called in on the off-chance that there is a dispute on actions taken by characters during RP. Until a ST is present, consider the scene to be frozen. To call for a ST to judge a scene use the +jreq command.

To submit a TP idea to staff where ST help may be needed simply submit a +request. Please provide as much information about the TP as you can and who will be the contact person for the TP. This will aid us in providing the best possible help for your role play.

STs will also be available to answer theme-related questions. If any STs are visible online feel free to page them to discuss your ideas.

Staff Judges

Judges will be either an Admin or a Wizard, and will assist with a variety of circumstances, including but not limited to:

  1. Overseeing any scene that has the potential for character death. They will provide assistance in assuring that the scene remains fair within the confines of the IC situation, and that all appropriate rules and policies are followed.
  2. Being the arbiters of any dispute of any scene where the need arises.
  3. Overseeing any player-run TinyPlot if requested. For example, if a group of players wish to overthrow the current Lord of a Tower, they will call in a Judge to oversee the overthrow.
  4. Determining the outcome of any scene which a character's player does not feel comfortable RPing out. The judge shall inform the player that was not comfortable with the RP of the final outcome.
  5. Judges will also answer for requests for investigations should the players not be available. If one of the involved players does not co-operate or is evasive when dealing with an investigation a Judge should be called in and the Judge will determine the necessary roles, will set a resolution, and inform all parties of the outcome.
  6. When in doubt, request a judge. There will never be any recriminations for calling a Judge to a scene. However, we do ask that players do not abuse this when common sense can be an equally effective judge.

Judges will never answer a +jreq if one of their own characters is involved, if it involves a faction their character is in, or if there is any other conflict of interest. In this case they will inform the other connected staff members that they can not answer the request. If they are the only staff member online at the time of the request, they will inform the requester that they can not answer the request due to a conflict of interest.

The decisions made by a Judge are final and it is expected that all players involved will respect the decision even if they do not agree with it or their character is harmed by the decision.

Helpers Guide

A few guidelines to being a Helper on Game of Kings:

  • Must be active - Helpers must be active to be of help on the game. Obviously. Not only will they be helping the newbie through CharGen they will also be helping the newbie once he/she hits the grid. They will help an existing house or group if they see one is struggling. They will always be on the look-out to find players and generate RP.
  • Must have intimate knowledge of the Theme and the setting on Game of Kings
  • In helping a Newbie through CharGen a Helper will not try to recruit for any one Kingdom, House or Guild. They will always look to find what the player is wanting and how that fits into the theme and game play.
  • Once the Newbie hits the grid a Helper will provide assistance in getting the newbie involved in the game as soon as it is possible.
  • More to come
