Upper Bailey — Brivey Keep
Were it not for the walls and the towering keep one would think they have stepped into a garden. Here paths of cut stone wind their way through well-tended flower plots and trimmed topiaries. Short hedges line the walkways leading up to the keep's entrance, and lanterns hang from posts set at even intervals to light the way.

The main, wide path leads from the lower bailey to the keep's entrance hall, while two other smaller paths split off in opposite directions to head to the guest wing and the temple.

16 June 1329

With the early afternoon sun rising in the sky, Paule and Katarina are in the gardens, sparring against the other. Using their swords, the two are in full combat, though the lack of flash of light on steel proves that they are using only training weapons as Paule is talking to his wife, the anger showing up clearer in his features. "If the two Royal brats think they can spend the month away from here on some sort of what they claim is 'forced' vacation where they went of and flirted and shopped in Wolveshire while we sat up here in the north and deal with this bullcrap now?" he says as he prepares to strike upon his wife. "I plan to do more than introduce Coriaria to court this time."

"I still believed that the King needs to be spoken to," Katarina counters, keeping her practice blade up and squaring off against Paule as his words both spark the need to defend her kinsman while - at the same time - echoing her own sentiments regarding the royal brats he has just spoken of. "He may not be fully aware of the actions of his children. You KNOW that his advisers shield him from a great deal, which is why one of us needs to get in to speak to him," she says, her voice quiet - low spoken - moving her sword in a calm defensive pattern.

"Do you think we should speak to him in private, or come out in court?" Paule asks as he moves to slice the blade towards the center of his wife, even as her blade catches his hand and he winces a little, reminded that it's a bad idea not to where gloves in this scenario. "I do not wish to disgrace your family, wife, but.."

Katarina tightens her hold on her sword, adjusting her grip to adjust the balance, the leather gauntlets protecting her hands even as the impact of his sword against her abdomen, "No," is said on that exhale of air. "If we try to speak to him in court, we'll never get a word in edge wise," she says in a low voice and steps forward in a aggressive series of moves to charge Paule while she continues to speak. "We need to press the issue, get Tomas to agree then work our way inward. You know how the dance works."

<COMBAT> Katarina attacks Paule with Broadsword - ARMOR on Neck stops the attack!

"I'd rather deal with a twenty Corsairs dressed in their netherwear than deal with court." Paule says, feeling that foul taste in his mouth, even as Katarina rattles his head with a smack against the side of his neck as the Baron drops back for a moment to look for an opening. As he moves in to strike. "So our first step is to win over Tomas. I hope you brought plenty of wine. And we should see if our dear oldest buying him a whore helped or harmed our chances, though from what I judged of him thus far, I'm sure it probably helped. So I will reimburse her that expense. Though wasting her money on two for Alek… I should not recompensate her that."

It had been a wonderful, glorious eve by all outside accounts, the truth was an entirely different matter. But to all the world Alek was once again clean, no travel sliming remaining and looking quite content, even happy as he finds his way back into the keep and comes to find himself in what makes for gardens in this place. The sound of combat draws his attention, for it is music to his ears! More so, it seems his ears are also burnning as he steps towards the sparring duo.

Would Katarina be lying if she didn't admit that she smacked Paule on the side of his neck on purpose, but then he smacked her against the front of her armor and that is going to leave a bloody bruise she's going to make sure that he pays for later. "I don't think we should have Cricket wade into this," she says with a slow shake of her head. "She resembles someone who was very dear to Tomas and it rattles him quite thoroughly, I'm not sure that her speaking to him.. well," and she brings the practice blade around again for another stinging strike. "I'm not sure that it's fair to Tomas and I'm not entirely comfortable with the way that he looks at her. I know it's not HER that he's seeing or thinking of. That doesn't make it any easier on Tomas."

"Then we will seek an audience with the King in private before court." Paule says as he gives a grin, moving in to strike before his wife's weapon slams against her husband's arm with a sick crack as she hits a sweet spot between the buckler and shoulder armor and there's a sharp yelp as the sword drops from his arm. "SHIT!" he hisses as he reaches to hold his arm and growls a little. "Yield." he manages to say as he draws in a breath. "There's a reason I attack from the shadows."

Katarina flicks the tip of her training blade upward until it's aimed at the space between armor and his skin, "in combat, yield means dead," she reminds in a low voice, keeping the blunt edge of the practice blade in place as he draws breath. "In court, there is no yield, there is no withdraw, there is no way to back out gracefully. In court, it's do, or die, and nothing in between." She takes the measured step back, giving Paule some room to breathe. "The court is all shadows, all intrigue, all death cloaked in silks and velvet and bedecked with jewels that glitter and gleam. I loathe court as much as you do," she rolls one shoulder slightly and flexes her free hand, "but it needs to be done. Otherwise we're going to have no choice but to handle the royal brats ourselves and, if we do, we risk being executed for treason, our lands forfeit, our children imprisoned or executed with us."

"Yes, but as a cousin of the King, you had far more practice at the arts of the Court than I have." Paule is willing to admit his weakness in the social graces. He never had the chance to develop them. As he presses his good hand to his wife's shoulder, he nods. "Aye. And such a path without the completely sound reasoning we have is totally dangerous." he admits and lets out his breath. "And I do not want to have our children pay for the sins of the father…" Not as he did. As he hears footfalls, he glances up. "Sir Alek. Rumor has it that your had a rather entertaining evening."

And into this charming tete-a-tete strolls none other than Cricket herself, looking much less frightful than she had the day before, though there's a faint odor clinging to her dress and a powdery smear of something black and vaguely glistening on her left cheek. Her fingers are similarly dirty, a layer of grime beneath her nails telling of hours spent occupied by an activity that she sometimes feels her parents aren't quite… refined enough to understand. They've been very patient with her habit of taking over entire rooms in the name of discovery, her bent for tinkering with anything and everything requiring a lot of space and privacy to indulge in uninterrupted thought.

She's /so/ busted if anyone discovers what she's done in the Keep, though. /That/ room will require some… sprucing up. And replacements. Oh, the bill will /not/ enthrall either the Baron or the Baroness.

"Hello!" the girl calls to her parents and Alek (he sure looks hale and hearty!), "Active as always, I see. You know — " she pauses to pick at some of the dirt under her nails before looking up at Katarine and Paule, " — I do sometimes wonder where all your energy comes from."

There is a mild wince as Alek hears…not the hiss, not the crack against Paule's arm..but at Paule actually saying Yield. Say it ain't so! Just giving a shake of his head, a sad, sad day. The Knight simply standing as an observer to the end of the fight. The proepr bows given to the Baron and his wife when the match is decided and he offers Paule a most charming smile at the comment, all the world happy to be aked about it. Even if those who know him best may notice just how his jaw clenches in that particular moment. "Rumors always have a shred of truth to them, my Lord, as you are most aware. It was a most…entertaining evening, Cricket thought I was lakcing for company and ensured I had a companion, the Madae thought that wasn't enough and through in a second for free, made me a most lucky man, my Lord. Lily and Sally were utter delights."

Alek's head turns as none other than his charge and glourious gifter of delightful pleasures arrives, offering a bow of his head to hear,"Good afternoon, Cricket. Looking chipper today. Though it seems keeping clean remains outside your graps." Giving just the faintest of sniffs,"Different, not quite last weeks rubbish at least."

"Thus, we speak to Tomas first and, once he is on our side, we press forward to the king," Katarina says as she lightly rests one hand on Paule's arm as well before turning to smile at Cricket and Alek. "My dear, what have you on your face this time?" is wondered as she slips a step forward and catches Cricket in a quick hug - careful not to squish her eldest against her training armor before leaning back and tapping lightly at the smudge on Cricket's cheek. "And what is this I'm hearing from the steward about more coin needed for renovations?" is wondered before she steps back all together and flicks a gleam of amusement toward Alek. "Lily and Sally, hm?" she wonders. "Interesting. Perhaps we should see about renting them for Castor."

The mention of Lily or Lili brings a darkening to Paule's face for a moment. There are times where it still his the Baron in the gut, but he shakes it off as Katarina addresses their oldest. "I have already told Coriaria that the Flowering Vines is rented out for her to host her party for 100th night." he says as he rubs at his arm for a moment to get it to stop tingling so they can try for a second round.

"What? Oh!" A hand reaches up to test at her face, and the tell-tale sign of her scientific inquiry rubs against already grotty fingers, causing the stuff to simply be smeared around further. Instead of one streak, there are now three across her skin. "It is called 'bitumen', Mother. There is a most /delightful/ store of materials in the Keep. Like an apothecary's shop, but with more… excitement." She grins wolfishly at her parents and then reaches to nudge Alek in the side with her elbow. "/You/ were not there to take notes, Sir Alek. It was all very distressing to have to record my observations by myself. I daresay I'll never get the process right if I don't have an assistant there to help out." At the mention of additional coin, she blushes slightly. "Uhhhh… there may or may not have been a small fire. But! I assure you, Mother! I had it all well in hand! It was /not/ my fault the mixture became unstable. And what's this about the Flowering Vines?" Yes, change of subject! Excellent! "I have plans in place for one-hundreth night, Father. You needn't worry."

A nod is given by Alek to Katarina,"Yes, Lily and Sally, a most delightful pair. Though I do not know how long they will be avaliable for such a rental, even if I am quite certain Castor would be overly delighted if you did such a thing for him." Alek glances over towards Paule a moment,"As they are not from the Flowering Vines, or any other northern establishment. They work for Madame Morganna, you know the fine red head you eyed a bit yourself, my Lord, the other eve…who runs the Verouis Pleasure House down south in the Citadel but is seeking to expand her business northwards." Least he paid attention enough in order to provide some…information other than, they were lovely girls?

The nudge from Criket has Alek giving her a charming smile, a hint of that clenched jaw,"Of course I was not, I was recovering from that fine evening of enjoyment you ordered me to. It was truly a delightful time. Though if you really needed me to write your notes and observations, surely you could have sent for me, my Lady?" It is the obvious solution to that problem.

"They have a large supply of pitch here?" Paule asks curiously as he reaches to wipe one of the smudges from his daughter's face and sniffs at it. "Interesting." he mutters as he considers his daughter. "There are areas set aside for such experiments, you know this." he points out casually as he frowns a little.

"Is it? excellent," Katarina replies with a smile for Paule, seeing the expression on his face has her stepping back to catch hold of one of Paule's hands in hers, tugging the leather gauntlets off first of course. "What sort of theme will you be setting?" she wonders of her eldest before falling silent to glance between Alex and Cricket.. then back again, letting Paule tackle the line of conversation regarding stuff that explodes.

"Apologies, Alek. You are right, of course. I suppose I got carried away." Then, to Paule, "Aye, a type of pitch, but not a large supply." She flinches a little as her father moves to examine the results of her shenanigans, and sighs. "The room was unattended and… unlocked. I didn't go /looking/ for it, you know. I happened to find it quite by accident. And as the opportunity presented itself, I… borrowed some materials. They are not easy to come by and I don't know when I shall next have access to them. I don't think it's /so/ bad… is it?" Hmmm. Perhaps she should ask next time. But surely they won't mind, not after Cricket was nice enough to send that gorgeous whore Tomas' way as a distraction! "As for the theme? Well, that will be a surprise, Mother."

Cricket is just given a smile from Alek,"You do have a tendency to get carried away when you get taken with an idea." To put it mildly. Though as the conversation and interest turns to Coriaria's experiment and the forth coming party she is to host, Alek falls to what he does best, simply listening and offering the occasional comment now and again, such as,"I do think that ishow trouble also finds you, Cricket, by accident." No, the eldest Westmark child would ever actively look for trouble…or unlcoked rooms with explosive materials in them.

"Did you make sure to put aside some for our use?" Paule asks curiously as he looks to his daughter and then listens to the conversation between daughter and guard. The Baron finishes rubbing his arm and then grins at his wife. "Shall we take a quick breather and then see if these two want to try their hand at besting us?"

"I vote we take a quick breather and fetch something cool to drink and then set these two against each other," Katarina suggests as she starts to peel off some of her practice armor. "Lets see how they handle sparring."

"That could be an idea." Paule says as he goes to start to remove his own armor. "Though, they may be afraid to be set against each other, after all, the protector may learn he's no longer needed in that primary role.." he teases playfully as he moves to pull a fresh draw from a barrel of water.

There is a mild shrug of Alek's shoulders at Paule's tease,"I am fine to spar, if Cricket is willing. And perhaps if we do discover I am no longer needed, then I might consider that retirement afterall." The Knight giving a grin with the comment, but his expression smooths as he notes more seriously,"Some is always needed in that role, even for the most able, as one person cannot see everything that passes. Especially when off the battlefiled and risking the dangers of other nobles and their vipereous playground of the Court."

"Well, I'm sure Cori and Alek have plenty to discuss or fight about." Paule says as he offers his arm to Katarina. "Shall you show me around your old stomping grounds and perhaps.. find someplace we can converse privately?"

Katarina smiles at Paule, after casting a long look at Cricket and Alek before she links one arm with his, hefting the rest of her training gear in her other hand. "Lets take a walk," she agrees and, with that, leads Paule away.
